God Is Light
He [Jesus] said, “I am the light of the world, whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life. (John 8:12b)

Andrea's Story
One of my favorite places in the world is Georgian Bay, Ontario. I was blessed to spend my childhood summers camping there with my family. I loved camping, swimming, hiking and boating. It was the best playground I could ask for. Our family had a little boat that helped us discover the lake. We found small island beaches, fun places to have picnics, and we even found old shipwrecks that we would dive around.

One day we had a great adventure at sea. My parents, my brother and his friend and I headed out across the lake in the morning to the closest city. This was a weekly trip for us. It was a route that my dad, our boat’s captain, knew very well. As we returned back that afternoon a storm began to brew. Suddenly the sky turned very dark and thick fog surrounded us. The waves were getting higher and higher and it began to rain. We were caught in a storm! Soon, we lost our way. All that was familiar was suddenly a mystery around us.

My dad remained very calm. He used his compass to help us navigate. My mom was getting very worried. My brother and his friend were making jokes. They were acting like we were all about to die at sea! I was scared! Would we ever find our way home? My heart was pounding. Time felt like it stood still. The waves were splashing over our little boat and the fog kept getting thicker and thicker.

After what felt like hours, we finally saw a light ahead of us. Was it another boat? As we moved toward the light it revealed its source. It was a lighthouse. The image was not clear, but the light was. There was a time of rejoicing in our boat! My dad now knew where we were. My mom was smiling. My brother and his friend stopped making jokes. And I was no longer scared. We found a light in the darkness. The lighthouse revealed our location and it gave us direction. We stayed close to the shore and then found our way back to the bay by our campsite.

Maybe you have never been lost at sea like I was, but in life have you ever felt like you were lost? Have you ever felt like you couldn’t find your way out of the darkness? In the darkness we don’t know where we are going. We can’t see our direction. But God is Light. He is able to light our way and lead us out of darkness. The Bible says that if we follow Him, we will never walk in darkness.

God's Word
Psalm 18:28:
You, O LORD, keep my lamp burning; my God turns my darkness into light.
Psalm 119:105:
Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path.
John 8:12:

When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”
1 John 1:5-7:
This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him there is no darkness at all. If we claim to have fellowship with him yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live by the truth. But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin.
