Lesson For The Week (Mar. 23)

God Is a Loving Father
How great is the love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are! (1 John 3:1)

Naomi's Story
When I was a little girl, I thought my life was perfect. My father, as a pastor, had to work a lot, but I didn’t really notice his absence. As I got older, my parents began to argue more and more. On my 13th birthday, my father moved out. A year later, my mother announced they were getting a divorce.

During this time, I felt very responsible for my mother and little sister. I believed I had to take care of them, even though I was still a child myself. In fact, I became so independent that I felt like I didn’t really need anyone’s help.

My dad would come visit my sister and me every Thursday night. He was trying to spend time building our relationship, but the way I saw it, we had no relationship in the first place. I was also angry with him for his part in the divorce. Unfortunately, he was so hurt himself that he couldn’t understand how we were feeling. As a result, my sister and I both developed a very superficial relationship with him.

At the beginning, I was very depressed. For a whole year, I cried myself to sleep almost every night. At school, I was a model student and had some great friends, but inside I was so unhappy. I used to think that because my parents’ marriage was a mistake, I must be a mistake too. The only thing that kept me from trying to kill myself was my belief that my mother and sister needed me.

One Saturday that year, I was home alone, cleaning the house and listening to music. One song that I had heard many times before caught my attention. “Lean on me, when you’re not strong, and I’ll be your friend. I’ll help you carry on.” That morning, it seemed like God was speaking to me through this song. I started to cry as I realized that even though I had talked to God before, what he really wanted from me wasn’t just a conversation. He wanted my whole life—everything! Right there, I admitted that I couldn’t go on without him. Once I did, I felt an incredible peace come over me.

Since then, every time I start to worry about what might happen to me, God reminds me that he is in control. Unlike my biological dad, my Heavenly Father will never leave me or forsake me. It isn’t always easy to rely on God. And even though I know God wants my family to love each other more, we still have our problems. But with our Heavenly Father taking care of us, we will continue to heal.

I John 3:1:
How great is the love the Father has lavished on us, that we should be called children of God! And that is what we are!
Ephesians 1:3-5:
Let us give thanks to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ! For in our union with Christ he has blessed us by giving us every spiritual blessing in the heavenly world. 4 Even before the world was made, God had already chosen us to be his through our union with Christ, so that we would be holy and without fault before him. Because of his love 5 God had already decided that through Jesus Christ he would make us his sons and daughters—this was his pleasure and purpose. (Today’s English Version)
Galatians 4:6, 7:

To show that you are his sons, God sent the Spirit of his Son into our hearts, the Spirit who cries out. “Father, my Father.” 7 So then, you are no longer a slave but a son. And since you are his son, God will give you all that he has for his sons.
Romans 8:35; 38, 39:
Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall trouble or hardship or persecution or famine or nakedness or danger or sword? 38 I am convinced that neither death nor life, neither angels nor demons, neither the present nor the future, nor any powers, 39 neither height nor depth, nor anything else in all creation, will be able to separate us from the love of God that is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Lesson For The Week (Mar.16)

The Source of True Love
And so we know and rely on the love God has for us. God is love.. (1 John 4:16a)

Linda Way's Story
It was my second year in college and I fell in love without knowing it. The guy I fell in love with was two years older than me. I thought he was smart, funny and kind. We enjoyed being with each other. We laughed a lot and shared deep thoughts with each other.

The only thing that bugged me was that he didn’t want to date me. He liked me. But he wasn’t ready to be in a relationship. We would just be friends. I thought to myself, “I can handle this. I can wait for him. One day he will be ready to date me and it will all be perfect.”

Throughout the year, we continued to “hang out.” In my heart, he was my boyfriend. We would go to the movies together. We’d talk on the phone a lot or cook dinners together. Those were the good days. But there were bad days, too.

The bad days were when he didn’t treat me like his girlfriend. He wouldn’t call me, or he would say mean things to me and tell me how I should change. So I worked hard to change for him. I began to lose confidence. I put a lot of my worth in this relationship and how he treated me. So on the good days, I felt attractive. On the bad days, I would slump into depression. More often, I had bad days. I felt ugly and worthless.

Then one day, he told me he stopped liking me. He said that I became like a sour taste in his mouth. My heart broke. That night, I cried out to God. And He spoke right to my heart.

“Aren’t the stars beautiful tonight?” He asked me. I looked up. I saw a black, starless night. “What stars? I don’t see any.” I said. “Yes, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t out there tonight. Just because you don’t see them doesn’t mean they aren’t beautiful. Linda, trust in Me.”

Even though my heart was broken, I had hope because of God. He reminded me that He thinks I am beautiful even when no one else does. I had a wake-up call. I realized that I had put my worth and value in something that could change. No wonder I was left disappointed and depressed. In pursuing love, I had forgotten to go to the Source of Love. But He didn’t forget about me. His love mended my broken heart.

God is my true love. His love for me is unchanging. I am safe and affirmed in His love for me. I need to receive the Source of Love before I can give and receive love. In fact, He is the best friend I have and will ever have.

Psalm 36:5, 7:
Your love, O Lord, reaches to the heavens, your faithfulness to the skies. 7 How priceless is your unfailing love! Both high and low among men find refuge in the shadow of your wings.
1 John 4:16a:
And so we know and rely on the love God has for us. God is love.
1 Corinthians 13:4-7:

Love is patient and kind. Love is not jealous or boastful or proud or rude. 5 It does not demand its own way. It is not irritable, and it keeps no record of being wronged. 6 It does not rejoice about injustice but rejoices whenever the truth wins out. 7 Love never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful, and endures through every circumstance.
John 3:16:
For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.
Romans 5:8:
But God demonstrates his own love for us in this: While we were still sinners, Christ died for us.

Lesson For The Week (Mar. 9)

God Is Light
He [Jesus] said, “I am the light of the world, whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life. (John 8:12b)
0000
Andrea's Story
One of my favorite places in the world is Georgian Bay, Ontario. I was blessed to spend my childhood summers camping there with my family. I loved camping, swimming, hiking and boating. It was the best playground I could ask for. Our family had a little boat that helped us discover the lake. We found small island beaches, fun places to have picnics, and we even found old shipwrecks that we would dive around.
0
One day we had a great adventure at sea. My parents, my brother and his friend and I headed out across the lake in the morning to the closest city. This was a weekly trip for us. It was a route that my dad, our boat’s captain, knew very well. As we returned back that afternoon a storm began to brew. Suddenly the sky turned very dark and thick fog surrounded us. The waves were getting higher and higher and it began to rain. We were caught in a storm! Soon, we lost our way. All that was familiar was suddenly a mystery around us.
0
My dad remained very calm. He used his compass to help us navigate. My mom was getting very worried. My brother and his friend were making jokes. They were acting like we were all about to die at sea! I was scared! Would we ever find our way home? My heart was pounding. Time felt like it stood still. The waves were splashing over our little boat and the fog kept getting thicker and thicker.
0
After what felt like hours, we finally saw a light ahead of us. Was it another boat? As we moved toward the light it revealed its source. It was a lighthouse. The image was not clear, but the light was. There was a time of rejoicing in our boat! My dad now knew where we were. My mom was smiling. My brother and his friend stopped making jokes. And I was no longer scared. We found a light in the darkness. The lighthouse revealed our location and it gave us direction. We stayed close to the shore and then found our way back to the bay by our campsite.
0
Maybe you have never been lost at sea like I was, but in life have you ever felt like you were lost? Have you ever felt like you couldn’t find your way out of the darkness? In the darkness we don’t know where we are going. We can’t see our direction. But God is Light. He is able to light our way and lead us out of darkness. The Bible says that if we follow Him, we will never walk in darkness.

Psalm 18:28:
You, O LORD, keep my lamp burning; my God turns my darkness into light.
Psalm 119:105:
Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light for my path.
John 8:12:

When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”
1 John 1:5-7:
This is the message we have heard from him and declare to you: God is light; in him there is no darkness at all. If we claim to have fellowship with him yet walk in the darkness, we lie and do not live by the truth. But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus, his Son, purifies us from all sin.

Lesson For The Week (Mar. 2)

God Is Our Healer
Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, 4 who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves have received from God. (2 Corinthians 1:3, 4)

Phil's Story
Growing up in school I experienced a problem of depression. I was told that some of it had been passed down to me from my mother, who had experienced the same problem. There were times in high school and college where I felt like I just wanted to give up completely. I thought about ending my own life, yes – I even thought about suicide. Fortunately, I didn’t do it. Otherwise, I would have missed the chance to come to Asia and experience a whole new chapter of my life. What kept me going? It was through discovering that God had some kind of purpose for my life.

However, in recent years, I still experienced periods of depression. After college, I’d developed chronic back problems. I could no longer enjoy sports (like basketball) that I’d always played when I was younger. This physical discomfort resulted in more mental and spiritual anguish. Sometimes I would ask God “If I’m serving you, why do I still suffer like this?” Yes, I had committed myself to working for God, but I later realized I wasn’t spending enough time with Him daily. I wasn’t spending enough time praying and reading the Bible.

In 2006, I developed a better habit of reading the Bible more regularly. I not only made more time to read it, but I also followed a more organized method. As I did so, I began to regain better perspective of my life. I started to see more of a purpose for what I was going through. At the same time, God helped me to develop a better way of caring for myself through exercise, diet, relaxation, etc. I learned to do exercises that made my back and the rest of my body stronger. My wife even helped me to update my wardrobe so I could look and feel better! Finally, I got connected with a good local church through the bilingual worship service here at Home Of Christ. This has been an important part of a physical, emotional and spiritual healing that God has been bringing in my life.

I now feel a lot stronger, more positive and confident than I did a year ago. Sure, I still feel sadness sometimes. Everybody does at times. It’s part of being human. However, what’s for certain is that I no longer spend so much time “in the pit” like I did before! My final message is: “Never give up!” God is able to bring healing. He is healing me, and I know He can do the same for you!

Jonah 2:2:
In my distress I called to the Lord, and he answered me. From the depths of the grave I called for help, and you listened to my cry.
Psalm 42:3, 5:
My tears have been my food day and night, while men say to me all day long, “Where is your God?” 5 Why are you downcast, O my soul? Why so disturbed within me? Put your hope in God, for I will yet praise him, my Savior and my God.
Psalm 55:22:

Cast your cares on the Lord and he will sustain you; he will never let the righteous fall.
2 Corinthians 1:3, 4:
Praise be to the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, 4 who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves have received from God.
