Lesson For The Week (Apr. 27)

Faith in Action
Now faith is being sure of what we hope for and certain of what we do not see. (Hebrews 11:1 )

Doris’s Story
What is faith? Faith is the evidence of things not seen. When we trust in something, we have faith. We trust our parents. We have faith in cars. Having faith means to go ahead and do things even when we don’t know what will happen. When I heard that many people in China had not heard about God, I wanted to tell them about His love. At age 21, I took a boat from Seattle to China. Even though I did not know what would happen, I had faith God was in control.

I studied Mandarin for a short time in China. We moved around because of the civil war. It was dangerous, but God protected me. When the Communists took over China, I moved to Hong Kong. Later I moved to Taiwan.

In Taiwan, many people went to temples. Only one tenth of one percent of the people went to church. Most people had not heard about God. I went to Hualien and lived with aboriginal people. I learned their language and told them about God. I also began Christian children’s and adult choirs, made songbooks, started youth camps, and recorded Christian radio programs.

In the early 50s, almost everyone had radios. So I thought, why not have radio programs to share God’s love? Many more people could be reached. I did not know how to produce radio programs, but I had faith God would help. We recorded radio programs in my living room and I took the programs to the local radio station on my bike.

In the 1960s Taiwan got television! By faith, for 15 years the Heavenly Melody Program was on TTV, the first station in Taiwan. We often did not know where the money to pay the TV station or even the money to buy our next meal would come from, but we had faith. God always provided.

The government asked me if I could teach English on the radio. In 1962, I began Studio Classroom. Now we have three magazines. Today, our radio programs and television shows can be seen and heard around the world. We meet students all over the world who have learned English from Studio Classroom.

I did not know these things would happen, but I had faith in God. Faith in action means to make right choices. God has something for everyone to do. You never know what God will have you to do. Will you be willing to live a life of faith and believe in God? Take a step of faith today and open your heart to believe in Jesus.

The Story of Beth’s Brothers
When he was a child, my older brother, Chuck, was hyperactive, had a low IQ, and often got in trouble at school. In junior high, he started hanging out with the wrong crowd and doing drugs. By the time he was 25, his drug habit had become a serious addiction. He stole from my parents to get money for drugs.

While I was in high school, Chuck was in and out of jail. He spent time in different rehabilitation centers, too. My parents tried everything to help him, but nothing seemed to work. When I entered college, I was glad to escape my family’s “circus.”

During my last year of college, I learned a shocking family secret. I found out that my mom had a child before she met my dad. My mom had made a difficult decision – she gave the baby boy up for adoption. A year later, she fell in love with my dad, got married and started our family.

Although my parents had four children already, my mom said she had always missed her firstborn son and hoped to meet him one day. However, because of the adoption arrangements, he would have to find her first.

Around the time I found out about my “other” brother, we learned that Chuck had manic-depressive disorder. He began taking medicine and seemed to be doing better. However, on February 1, 2001, Chuck committed suicide. Sadly, I think Chuck believed that we’d be happier without him. We were all full of guilt and regret, especially my parents.

Six weeks after Chuck's death, my mom got a life-changing phone call. Her firstborn son wanted to find her! My “new” brother, David, and my mom had many phone conversations over the next few weeks. In May 2001, David came to meet us. When I saw him, I couldn't believe it! He looked amazingly like Chuck!

David wanted to find his mom for many years, but was too scared. However, right around the time Chuck passed away, David felt very strongly that he must contact his mother.

Of course, we miss Chuck a lot, and David can’t replace him. But I believe God arranged this reunion. He truly provides for our needs at just the right time! Because God loves us so much, He can turn our mistakes around for good. God used my mother’s mistake of having a baby before marriage to bring light to my family during the dark time of Chuck's death.

Friends, this life can be full of sadness. But as the Lord has shown my family, it’s also full of joy! It doesn’t matter what you’re facing or what wrong things you’ve done in the past. God can turn it all around – if you let Him! Never underestimate what He can do!

Isaiah 55:9:
As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.
Psalm 103:8-12:
The Lord is merciful and loving, slow to become angry and full of constant love. 9 He does not keep on rebuking; he is not angry forever. 10 He does not punish us as we deserve or repay us according to our sins and wrongs. 11 As high as the sky is above the earth, so great is his love for those who honor him. 12 As far as the east is from the west, so far does he remove our sins from us. (Good News Translation)
Job 5:11:
He sets on high those who are lowly, and those who mourn are lifted to safety.
Hebrews 4:15,16:
For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but we have one who has been tempted in every way, just as we are--yet was without sin. 16 Let us then approach the throne of grace with confidence, so that we may receive mercy and find grace to help us in our time of need.
2 Corinthians 12:9:
But He [the Lord] said to me, "My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness."

Lesson For The Week (Mar. 30)

God Is Our Help
“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” (Jeremiah 29:11)

Gareth's Story
I experienced many challenges when growing up. My parents quarreled, and I seldom felt secure at home. Our family moved around a lot. I always had trouble making and keeping new friends.

By the time I became a teenager I was sad and angry. I hung around with bad friends, doing things that were against the law. I certainly could and should have been caught and punished for what I had been doing. My worldview back then was very dark. I was tense and hard for people to understand. I often wondered about God in the back of my mind. But I didn’t believe he was interested in helping me. Yet amazingly, I was able to graduate from high school and enter university.

In university I had some other major disappointments. I lost in two elections for student government and the student newspaper. After breaking up with a bad girlfriend I almost wanted to stop living. But fortunately I met better friends, and separated from those bad, dangerous friends. Academically I was very successful. I even had a nice, normal dating relationship with a Christian girl.

After university I moved to Taiwan. I was glad to escape my hometown and the string of bad memories. In Taiwan I started to enjoy life more. People treated me with more kindness and respect. Taiwan was a place where everything could be different. And it was! I got a job teaching English at a language school. There I met a nice local girl. (Three years later we got married.) One night I took a lonely walk in the park. Looking up into the sky, I started to speak out loud to God, though I wasn’t sure if anyone was listening. A few steps later I came across a book someone had left on a bench: the Bible.

Soon after I interviewed for a job as a writer for Studio Classroom. As a Christian company, would they hire me? I told them I believed there was a God out there somewhere, but I wasn’t yet settled in my faith. They gave me the job anyway. Less than a year later, I decided to become a Christian. I prayed and asked Jesus into my life.

As I considered my life growing up, the truth in the Bible touched me more and more. Though I’d gone through some bad times, God had somehow helped in my life over the last few years. God was refining me and preparing me for better things to come, even when I was apart from Him. I was able to learn and grow from my challenges. Today, God continues to help me. Little by little I am becoming a more gentle, patient, responsible and kind person by His grace.

Romans 8:28; 31:
We know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose. 31 …If God is for us then who can be against us?
Genesis 50:19:
You intended me harm, but God intended it for good.
Romans 5:3-5:

Not only so, but we also rejoice in our sufferings, because we know that suffering produces perseverance; 4 perseverance, character; and character, hope. 5 And hope does not disappoint us, because God has poured out his love into our hearts by the Holy Spirit, whom he has given us.
Matthew 13:31, 32:
He told them another parable: “The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed, which a man took and planted in his field. 32 Though it is the smallest of all your seeds, yet when it grows, it is the largest of garden plants and becomes a tree, so that the birds of the air come and perch in its branches.”
Jeremiah 29:11:
