Lesson For The Week (Jan. 4)

Security
But whoever listens to me will have security. He will be safe, with no reason to be afraid. (Proverbs 1:33)

Getting Started

We have so many things to make us feel secure, and we are always inventing more. We have locks, alarms, security cameras, emergency phone numbers, police, firemen, security guards at banks and hospitals, passwords on our computers, streetlights, and cell phones, just to name a few. But even with all these reasons to feel safe, many of us don’t. A world-wide survey was done last January to see how safe people feel. Over 1 billion people were interviewed. Half of them said that they did not feel safe enough. Half also said they fear their children’s world will be even less secure. Where can we find true security?

* Gallup International, January 2004

Vocabulary
security (n) – safety; freedom from danger, fear and worry; having everything you need
alarm (n) – a device to protect a house or car that makes noise if someone tries to break in
guard (n) – a person hired to protect someone or something
survey (n) – an interview given to many different people to find out information
widow (n) – a woman whose husband has died
bury (v) – to place under ground

Reading God’s Word
Ruth was a young widow from a land called Moab.
Her husband had not been a Moabite. He was an Israelite who had come to
Moab with his family. When he died, everyone expected Ruth to stay in Moab
and get married again. An unmarried woman was powerless in those days.
Ruth’s sister-in-law, Orpah, was also a widow and so she faced the same problem.
But Ruth and Orpah really loved their mother-in-law, Naomi, and she wanted to
return to her own homeland.
Ruth 1:7-17
7 They started out together to go back to Judah, but on the way 8 she said to them, "Go back home and stay with your mothers. May the Lord be as good to you as you have been to me and to those who have died. 9 And may the Lord make it possible for each of you to marry again and have a home." So Naomi kissed them good-bye. But they started crying 10 and said to her, "No! We will go with you to your people." 11 "You must go back, my daughters," Naomi answered. "Why do you want to come with me? Do you think I could have sons again for you to marry? 12 Go back home, for I am too old to get married again. Even if I thought there was still hope, and so got married tonight and had sons, 13 would you wait until they had grown up? Would this keep you from marrying someone else? No, my daughters, you know that's impossible. . . 14 Again they started crying. Then Orpah kissed her mother-in-law good-bye and went back home, but Ruth held on to her. 15 So Naomi said to her, "Ruth, your sister-in-law has gone back to her people and to her god. Go back home with her." 16 But Ruth answered, "Don't ask me to leave you! Let me go with you. Wherever you go, I will go; wherever you live, I will live. Your people will be my people, and your God will be my God. 17 Wherever you die, I will die, and that is where I will be buried. May the Lord's worst punishment come upon me if I let anything but death separate me from you!"

Taking a Closer Look

1. What does Naomi advise Ruth and Orpah to do? (1:8)
2. What reasons does she give for telling Ruth and Orpah to leave? (1:9)
3. What does Orpah decide to do? (1:14)
4. What does Ruth decide? (1:16,17)
5. What risk is Ruth taking?
6. Where does Ruth find security? (1:16)
7. Where do you find security?

Taking Action

1. Sometimes even though we know God is taking care of us, we still worry about our security. How can we get better at putting our life in God’s hands?

2. Because Ruth felt truly secure that God would take care of her, she had the courage to take a big risk to help her mother-in-law. What risks are you willing to take to help others?

Lesson For The Week (Dec. 28)

God’s Promises
49 Remember your promise to me, your servant; it has given me hope. 50 Even in my suffering I was comforted because your promise gave me life. (Psalms 119:49-50)

Getting Started

Has anyone ever broken a promise to you? Have you ever broken a promise you made to someone?

Isaiah was a person who knew a lot about promises. He lived about 2700 years ago, and he was a prophet. During Isaiah’s time, the people of God were under attack. People from other countries were trying to kill them and take their land. God promised his people, through Isaiah, that he would send a Savior. The people waited, and waited, and after awhile became angry with God. They thought he had broken his promise to them. Have you ever felt this way? God’s timing and God’s plan can be different from what we want. But God is faithful. He keeps his promises, even when people sometimes doubt him.

Vocabulary
prophet (n) – someone given a special message or vision from God to communicate to others
harvest (v) – to pick grain or fruit
yoke (n) – a wooden bar that chains two animals together, or chains a heavy load to an animal
oppress (v) – to mistreat; to keep under control
exploit (v) – to use someone or something in an unfair way
counselor (n) – someone who gives advice
successor (n) – someone who comes after or takes the place of someone else

Reading God’s Word
Isaiah 9:2-7
2 The people who walked in darkness have seen a great light. They lived in a land of shadows, but now light is shining on them. 3 You have given them great joy, Lord; you have made them happy. They rejoice in what you have done, as people rejoice when they harvest grain or when they divide captured wealth. 4 For you have broken the yoke that burdened them and the rod that beat their shoulders. You have defeated the nation that oppressed and exploited your people. . . 6 A child is born to us! A son is given to us! And he will be our ruler. He will be called, "Wonderful Counselor," "Mighty God," "Eternal Father," "Prince of Peace." 7 His royal power will continue to grow; his kingdom will always be at peace. He will rule as King David's successor, basing his power on right and justice, from now until the end of time. The Lord Almighty is determined to do all this.
At the time this was written, these things hadn’t happened yet. In fact, it would be another 700 years before these things would take place!

John 3:16
For God loved the world so much that he gave his only Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not die but have eternal life.

John 14:2-32
There are many rooms in my Father's house, and I am going to prepare a place for you. I would not tell you this if it were not so. 3 And after I go and prepare a place for you, I will come back and take you to myself, so that you will be where I am.

Taking a Closer Look

1. Jesus is the “great light” shining on the people of God. Why call Jesus a “great light”? (Isaiah 9:2)
2. Why do the people of God rejoice? (Isaiah 9:4)
3. Who is the child that will be born? What will he be called? (Isaiah 9:6)
4. Jesus wasn’t rich, or powerful, or famous. Why call him these things?
5. Do you think the people of God had faith that these things would come true? Why or why not?
6. What does God promise for those who believe in Him? (John 3:16) Do you have faith to accept this promise for yourself?
7. What promise does Jesus make to his followers? (John 14:2-3) Do you have faith that this is true?

Taking Action

1. Sometimes it’s hard to accept God’s timing. God tells us to wait, but we want things to happen RIGHT AWAY! How can we learn to be more patient?
2. The people of God thought Jesus would come as a mighty king, but he came as a poor and humble man. Sometimes God’s promises come true in a different way than we imagined. How should we react when this happens? What can we learn from this?

Lessons for the Week (Dec. 14)

Generosity
He who gives to the poor will lack nothing. (Proverbs 28:27)

Getting Started

Most people enjoy being generous. To give someone a small amount of money, time, or help makes us feel good. But most of us reach a point where we say, “Okay, I’ve given enough. I have to take care of myself now.” However, there are some people whose generosity is amazing. It seems to have no limits. What do you think about people like this? Many of us admire these people, but not many of us would want to have their lifestyle of sacrifice. What is the secret of being whole-heartedly generous all the time?

Vocabulary
generosity (n) – willingness to give something away, money, help, time, etc.
reach a point (v phr) – to come to a certain state or condition
to have no limits (v phr) – never stops or lessens
sacrifice (v) – to give up something you love
widow (n) – a woman whose husband has died
measure (n) – an amount of something

Reading God’s Word
Acts 9:36-42
36 In Joppa there was a woman named Tabitha, who was a believer. (Her name in Greek is Dorcas, meaning "a deer.") She spent all her time doing good and helping the poor. 37 At that time she got sick and died. Her body was washed and laid in a room upstairs. 38 Joppa was not very far from Lydda, and when the believers in Joppa heard that Peter was in Lydda, they sent two men to him with the message, "Please hurry and come to us." 39 So Peter got ready and went with them. When he arrived, he was taken to the room upstairs, where all the widows crowded around him, crying and showing him all the shirts and coats that Dorcas had made while she was alive. 40 Peter put them all out of the room, and knelt down and prayed; then he turned to the body and said, "Tabitha, get up!" She opened her eyes, and when she saw Peter, she sat up. 41 Peter reached over and helped her get up. Then he called all the believers, including the widows, and presented her alive to them. 42 The news about this spread all over Joppa, and many people believed in the Lord.

Luke 6:38
38 Give to others, and God will give to you. Indeed, you will receive a full measure, a generous helping, poured into your hands — all that you can hold. The measure you use for others is the one that God will use for you.

Taking a Closer Look

1. From this story, what do we know about the kind of person Dorcas was?
2. Why do you think the believers in Joppa wanted Peter to come to them? (Acts 9:38)
3. What did the widows show Peter when he arrived in the room upstairs? (Acts 9:39) How did these ladies feel about Dorcas?
4. What did Peter do after the others left the room? (Acts 9:40)
5. Who heard about this news? What was their response? (9:42)
6. What are some benefits of being generous? (Luke 6:38)

Taking Action

1. One of the keys to being generous is really paying attention to other people’s needs — not just seeing them and forgetting about them. Think of some people you see every day. What are their needs? How can you be more generous to them?
2. It is hard to be generous if we are worried about not having enough for ourselves. How can we stop worrying? How can we remind ourselves that God will take care of our needs?

Lessons for the Week (Dec. 7)

Finding Joy
You will show me the path that leads to life; your presence fills me with joy and brings me pleasure forever. (Psalm 16:11)

Getting Started

What gives you joy? Do you often feel joyful?

Many people think joy is a reaction or response to something. They think we feel joyful when something good happens. But with Christ in your life, it is possible to have joy no matter what is happening. Joy can be an ongoing emotion, something we have in good times and bad. The Bible tells us to, “rejoice in the Lord always.” (Philippians 4:4) This doesn’t mean we should not feel sad when painful things happen. But even when we feel pain, we can still rejoice in God’s great love for us, knowing that God is working in us, and making us stronger, better people.

Vocabulary
produce (v) – to make or create something
humility (n) – not arrogant or proud
duty (n) – a job or responsibility
honor (n) – respect, esteem, praise
union (n) – a result of bringing or joining together people or things

Reading God’s Word
John 15:9-11
Jesus teaches his disciples about living close to him.
9 I love you just as the Father loves me; remain in my love. 10 If you obey my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have obeyed my Father's commands and remain in his love. 11 I have told you this so that my joy may be in you and that your joy may be complete.

Galatians 5:22-23
22 But the Spirit produces love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 humility, and self-control.

Paul wrote the following passages in Philippians while he was in prison.

Philippians 1:18-21
18 And I will continue to be happy, 19 because I know that by means of your prayers and the help which comes from the Spirit of Jesus Christ, I shall be set free. 20 My deep desire and hope is that I shall never fail in my duty, but that at all times, and especially right now, I shall be full of courage, so that with my whole being I shall bring honor to Christ, whether I live or die. 21 For what is life? To me, it is Christ. Death, then, will bring more.

Philippians 4:4-7
4 May you always be joyful in your union with the Lord. I say it again: rejoice! 5 Show a gentle attitude toward everyone. The Lord is coming soon. 6 Don't worry about anything, but in all your prayers ask God for what you need, always asking him with a thankful heart. 7 And God's peace, which is far beyond human understanding, will keep your hearts and minds safe in union with Christ Jesus.

Taking a Closer Look

1. How can we remain in Jesus’ love? What will this give us? (John 15:9-11)
2. If we have the Spirit of God in our lives, what qualities will grow in us? (Galatians 5:22-23)
3. What is Paul’s deep desire and hope? (Philippians 1:20)
4. What is the most important thing to Paul? (Philippians 1:21) How do you think this might make it easier for him to have joy, even though he is in prison?
5. Why don’t we have to worry about anything? How should we ask God for things? (Philippians 4:6)
6. Have you ever experienced the “peace which is far beyond human understanding”? Describe the situation. (Philippians 4:7)
7. Do you think you can build joy in your life, the way Paul did? How?

Taking Action
If you want to have more joy in your life, here are some ways to help you increase it.
1. Remember to thank God for what he has given you. Even in terrible situations, there are always blessings to thank him for. Focusing on what you have, instead of what you don’t have, will help bring you joy.
2. Remember that God has a plan to use every painful experience you go through. Paul knew that God was using his pain in prison to encourage other people. You can find joy in knowing that God will use your pain to make you a stronger, more caring person. (James 1:2-9)
3. Review the promises God makes to us in the Bible. We know these promises will come true, and this brings joy.
* God will never leave us. (Hebrews 13:5)
* He hears our prayers. (Psalm 116:1-2)
* He will provide for our needs. (Matthew 6:33)

Lessons for the Week (Nov. 30)

Gratitude
I will always thank the Lord; I will never stop praising him. (Psalm 34:1)

Getting Started

What are you grateful for? About how many times each day do you say “thank you” to someone? Remembering to say “thank you,” even for a very small favor, is important. It can make someone’s day. It can be a step towards fixing a broken relationship. Thinking about what is good in every situation can create a spirit of true gratitude in our hearts. And having a grateful heart can change the way we look at our lives. It can turn a little into enough, a meal into a feast, a stranger into a friend.

Vocabulary
gratitude (n) – thankfulness
make someone’s day (v phr) – to please someone; to do something that makes them happier than anything else that day
grateful (adj) - thankful
dreaded (adj) – feared by everyone
disease (n) – sickness
pity (n) – feeling sorry for someone
examine (v) – to look at closely
oppressed (adj) – hurt; treated badlyproclaim (v) – to speak out loudly; to tell everyone

Reading God’s Word
Jesus was traveling along the border of two different areas, Galilee and Samaria. The people in Galilee were Jews, like Jesus. The people in Samaria were from a different ethnic background. Because of their differences, these two groups of people didn’t always get along very well.

Luke 17:11-19
11 As Jesus made his way to Jerusalem, he went along the border between Samaria and Galilee. 12 He was going into a village when he was met by ten men suffering from a dreaded skin disease. They stood at a distance 13 and shouted, "Jesus! Master! Have pity on us!" 14 Jesus saw them and said to them, "Go and let the priests examine you." On the way they were made clean. 15 When one of them saw that he was healed, he came back, praising God in a loud voice. 16 He threw himself to the ground at Jesus' feet and thanked him. The man was a Samaritan. 17 Jesus spoke up, "There were ten who were healed; where are the other nine? 18 Why is this foreigner the only one who came back to give thanks to God?" 19 And Jesus said to him, "Get up and go; your faith has made you well."

Psalm 34:1-10
1 I will always thank the Lord; I will never stop praising him. 2 I will praise him for what he has done; may all who are oppressed listen and be glad! 3 Proclaim with me the Lord's greatness; let us praise his name together! 4 I prayed to the Lord, and he answered me; he freed me from all my fears. 5 The oppressed look to him and are glad; they will never be disappointed. 6 The helpless call to him, and he answers; he saves them from all their troubles. 7 His angel guards those who honor the Lord and rescues them from danger. 8 Find out for yourself how good the Lord is. Happy are those who find safety with him. 9 Honor the Lord, all his people; those who obey him have all they need. 10 Even lions go hungry for lack of food, but those who obey the Lord lack nothing good.
00
Taking a Closer Look
1. What were the men suffering from? (Luke 17:12)
2. Why did they call out to Jesus? What did they hope he could do? (Luke 17:13)
3. What was Jesus’ answer? If you were one of these men, would this answer give you hope, or not? (Luke 17:14)
4. What happened on the way to see the priests? (Luke 17:14)
5. Why did the one man come back? Why do you think the others did not come back? (Luke 17: 15-16)
6. Why was Jesus surprised that a Samaritan had come back to thank him?
7. What did Jesus say made the man well? (Luke 17:19)
8. Look at Psalm 34:4. The author writes in the past tense. Do you ever look back at painful times and see things that you can be grateful for?
9. Psalm 34:9 says, “those who obey him have all they need,” but sometimes we don’t feel like we have all we need. Why do you think we should be grateful in these situations?

Taking Action
1. Say “thank you” to others as often as possible.
2. Think about all the blessings you have to be thankful for today. If you want to, make a list and see how it grows longer over time.
3. Say “thank you” to God for anything that brings you happiness. Just a quick, little prayer.

Lesson For The Week (Nov. 23)

Contentment
16 Be joyful always, 17 pray at all times, 18 be thankful in all circumstances. (1 Thessalonians 5:16-18)

Getting Started

Are you content with your life? Why or why not?

Studies show that people in poorer countries tend to be more content than people in richer countries. If this is true, then money is obviously not the secret to contentment. No matter how much we have, there always seems to be something we want and can’t get. Contentment does not mean having everything we want, or even everything we need. Contentment is being happy with what you have and who you are.

Vocabulary
contentment (n) – being happy and satisfied with the way things are
tend (v) – to be likely to react or behave in a certain way
secret (n) – the key or the way to get something
ailment (n) – sickness or injury
grace (n) – undeserved kindness
persecution (n) – bad treatment of people because of what they believe or who they are
religion (n) – one’s belief and way of worship

ruin (n) – complete destruction

Reading God’s Word
Paul was a missionary who took God’s word to many people. During his travels, he was sometimes sick or hungry. He was put in prison a few times. Sometimes people tried to kill him. He was even shipwrecked – three times! But Paul was content with his life.

2 Corinthians 12:7-10
If you could change something about your life what would it be? Paul prayed for something in his life to be changed. But, God had other plans!
7 But to keep me from being puffed up with pride because of the many wonderful things I saw, I was given a painful physical ailment, which acts as Satan's messenger to beat me and keep me from being proud. 8 Three times I prayed to the Lord about this and asked him to take it away. 9 But his answer was: "My grace is all you need, for my power is greatest when you are weak." I am most happy, then, to be proud of my weaknesses, in order to feel the protection of Christ's power over me. 10 I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and difficulties for Christ's sake. For when I am weak, then I am strong.
00
Philippians 4:12-13
Are you satisfied with the things you have? Do you sometimes want more? Do you sometimes wish you had less?
12 I know what it is to be in need and what it is to have more than enough. I have learned this secret, so that anywhere, at any time, I am content, whether I am full or hungry, whether I have too much or too little. 13 I have the strength to face all conditions by the power that Christ gives me. .

1 Timothy 6:6-10
6 Well, religion does make us very rich, if we are satisfied with what we have. 7 What did we bring into the world? Nothing! What can we take out of the world? Nothing! 8 So then, if we have food and clothes, that should be enough for us. 9 But those who want to get rich fall into temptation and are caught in the trap of many foolish and harmful desires, which pull them down to ruin and destruction. 10 For the love of money is a source of all kinds of evil. Some have been so eager to have it that they have wandered away from the faith and have broken their hearts with many sorrows.
00
Taking a Closer Look
1. What did Paul do when he wanted something changed in his life? (2 Corinthians 12:8)
2. What was God’s answer to Paul’s prayer? How can God’s power be greatest when we are weak? (2 Corinthians 12:9)
3. Why was Paul happy and proud of his weaknesses? (2 Corinthians 12:9)
4. Why do you think God doesn’t want us to be too strong or too confident in ourselves? What could be dangerous about that?
5. How do you think Paul could be content if he was hungry? (Philippians 4:12)
6. Do you think you would be content if you didn’t have enough? WatWh What if you had too much?
7. What are some “foolish and harmful desires” that come with wanting to be rich? (1 Timothy 6:6-10)
8. Why should we be satisfied with what we have? Does this mean we shouldn’t work toward goals and dreams for the future?
9. Paul showed us that we can be content if we have a lot or if we have nothing. Where does true contentment come from?

Taking Action
1. Think about all the good things in your life - your family, your friends and other blessings that you have. Remember to be grateful for these things.
2. Think of some ways to help your friends, family, and others in need. Helping others takes your mind off your problems. It can help you feel content with who you are and what you have.

Lessons for the Week (Nov. 16)

Living With Purpose
0000
Getting Started
How many classmates do you have? How many co-workers? Do you ever feel like the world has too many people, and there is no special job, or purpose designed just for you?

A famous writer once said, “Each of us is meant to be what no other can be, and do what no other can do.” (William Ellery Channing) Do you agree? How can we be sure of our purpose in life? What are we living for?
0

Vocabulary
purpose (n) – a reason for doing something
prophet (n) – a person who speaks for God; a person who has special knowledge from God
sovereign (adj) – above all others in power and authority, like a ruler
violence (n) – physical force used to hurt someone
destruction (n) – ruin; damage
ridicule (v) – to make fun of; to laugh at in an unkind way
scorn (v) – to look down on; to think of as unworthy
prosperity (n) – success; having more than enough of what you need
disaster (n) – something terrible that causes a lot of damage or loss

Reading God’s Word
Jeremiah was a man who lived about 600 years before Jesus. God gave Jeremiah a special purpose. He wanted Jeremiah to be a prophet – someone who would speak for Him, and give His messages to the people.
Jeremiah 1:4-9
4 The Lord said to me, 5 "I chose you before I gave you life, and before you were born I selected you to be a prophet to the nations." 6 I answered, "Sovereign Lord, I don't know how to speak; I am too young." 7 But the Lord said to me, "Do not say that you are too young, but go to the people I send you to, and tell them everything I command you to say. 8 Do not be afraid of them, for I will be with you to protect you. I, the Lord, have spoken!" 9 Then the Lord reached out, touched my lips, and said to me, "Listen, I am giving you the words you must speak.

Jeremiah 20:7-9
7 Lord, you have deceived me, and I was deceived. You are stronger than I am, and you have overpowered me. Everyone makes fun of me; they laugh at me all day long. 8 Whenever I speak, I have to cry out and shout, "Violence! Destruction!" Lord, I am ridiculed and scorned all the time because I proclaim your message. 9 But when I say, "I will forget the Lord and no longer speak in his name," then your message is like a fire burning deep within me. I try my best to hold it in, but can no longer keep it back.

Jeremiah 29:11
(God speaks to Jeremiah)
11 I alone know the plans I have for you, plans to bring you prosperity and not disaster, plans to bring about the future you hope for. 12 Then you will call to me. You will come and pray to me, and I will answer you. 13 You will seek me, and you will find me because you will seek me with all your heart.

Romans 8:28
28 We know that in all things God works for good to those who love him, those whom he has called according to his purpose.

Taking a Closer Look
1. When did God choose Jeremiah? (1:5)
2. How did Jeremiah feel about the purpose God gave him? (1:4-9)
3. Why is Jeremiah “ridiculed and scorned”? (20:7-9)
4. Why does he feel deceived? (20:7-9)
5. Why can’t he stop speaking God’s message? (20:9)
6. What kind of plans does God have for Jeremiah? (29:11)
7. What kind of plans do you think God has for you?
8. When can we find God? (29:13)
9. What does God do for those who love him and are called to his purposes? (Romans 8:28)

Taking Action
1. God has a different plan for everyone, but he wants us all to have the same purpose. That purpose is very simple; he wants us to love him and let him “work for good” in our lives. How can we make it easy for God to “work for good” in our lives?
2. God was very clear with Jeremiah; he spoke to him and told him what he wanted Jeremiah to do. But sometimes God’s plan might not seem very clear to us. What can we do if we are confused about God’s plan? How can we become more sure about what he wants us to do?

Lessons for the Week (Nov. 9)

Knowing Your Worth
I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. (Psalm 139:14)
0000
Getting Started
How high is your self-esteem? How do you measure your self-worth?

Even beautiful, talented, intelligent people can have low self-esteem. Sometimes famous people may be able to shine in front of a crowd, but they may be very insecure. We cannot measure our self-worth by how beautiful, talented, or intelligent we are. If we do, we might feel inferior, because there will always be someone more beautiful, or talented, or intelligent. On the other hand, we can usually find someone less beautiful, less talented, or less intelligent than we are, and this can make us proud. How should we measure our self-worth?
0
Vocabulary
self-esteem (n) – the value you place on yourself
insecure (adj) – not sure of yourself; having no strong sense of value; without strong support
inferior (adj) – less important or worthy than others
clan (n) – a large family group
tribe (n) – a social group of many different families
torch (n) – a burning stick used to give light
trumpet (n) – a musical instrument
descendant (n) – your children’s children, and their children, and so on

Reading God’s Word
The Midianites were a very strong, powerful group of people. They controlled the Lord’s people, the Israelites. When the Israelites tried to plant crops, the Midianites would come and destroy the crops. The Lord chose a man named Gideon to help free his people from the Midianites.
Judges 6:14-1614
Then the Lord ordered him, "Go with all your great strength and rescue Israel from the Midianites. I myself am sending you." 15 Gideon replied, "But Lord, how can I rescue Israel? My clan is the weakest in the tribe of Manasseh, and I am the least important member of my family." 16 The Lord answered, "You can do it because I will help you. You will crush the Midianites as easily as if they were only one man."

Then the Lord helped Gideon to build an army. More than 30,000 men came to help fight the Midianties. But God then showed Gideon that victory would not come from the strength of his army.
Judges 7:2-8
2 The Lord said to Gideon, "The men you have are too many for me to give them victory over the Midianites. They might think that they had won by themselves, and so give me no credit. 3 Announce to the people, "Anyone who is afraid should go back home, and we will stay here at Mount Gilead.' " So twenty-two thousand went back, but ten thousand stayed. 4 Then the Lord said to Gideon, "You still have too many men. Take them down to the water, and I will separate them for you there. If I tell you a man should go with you, he will go. If I tell you a man should not go with you, he will not go."

The Lord continued to send men home until there were only 300 men left. Gideon divided them into three groups of 100 and they went to fight the Midianites. The Lord told them to carry trumpets, and jars with torches inside.

Judges 7: 19-22
19 Gideon and his one hundred men came to the edge of the camp a while before midnight, just after the guard had been changed. Then they blew the trumpets and broke the jars they were holding, 20 and the other two groups did the same. They all held the torches in their left hands, the trumpets in their right, and shouted, "A sword for the Lord and for Gideon!" 21 Every man stood in his place around the camp, and the whole enemy army ran away yelling. 22 While Gideon's men were blowing their trumpets, the Lord made the enemy troops attack each other with their swords.

Judges 8:22-23
22 After that, the Israelites said to Gideon, "Be our ruler—you and your descendants after you. You have saved us from the Midianites." 23 Gideon answered, "I will not be your ruler, nor will my son. The Lord will be your ruler."

Taking a Closer Look
1. Why was Gideon so surprised when the Lord chose him? (6:15)
2. Why did the Lord think there were too many men? (7:2)
3. How did the Lord tell Gideon to win the battle? (7:19-20) Why do you think the Lord gave him such strange orders?
4. How did the Lord defeat the Midianites? (7:22)
5. Why did Gideon refuse to be the Israelites’ ruler? (8:23)
6. Where did Gideon find the confidence to attack such a large army?
7. How does God want us to measure our self-worth?

Taking Action
1. Although Gideon was concerned with his own weaknesses, he trusted God could still use him in a powerful way. How can we get better at relying on God, instead of relying on our own abilities?
2. God sees us in a different way than the rest of the world sees us. In God’s eyes, we are all beautiful and precious. How can we learn to value his opinion more than anyone else’s?

7 Jesus noticed how some of the guests were choosing the best places, so he told this parable to all of them: 8 "When someone invites you to a wedding feast, do not sit down in the best place. It could happen that someone more important than you has been invited, 9 and your host, who invited both of you, would have to come and say to you, "Let him have this place.' Then you would be embarrassed and have to sit in the lowest place. 10 Instead, when you are invited, go and sit in the lowest place, so that your host will come to you and say, "Come on up, my friend, to a better place.' This will bring you honor in the presence of all the other guests. 11 For those who make themselves great will be humbled, and those who humble themselves will be made great." 12 Then Jesus said to his host, "When you give a lunch or a dinner, do not invite your friends or your brothers or your relatives or your rich neighbors or they will invite you back, and in this way you will be paid for what you did. 13 When you give a feast, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, and the blind; 14 and you will be blessed, because they are not able to pay you back. God will repay you on the day the good people rise from death."

19 "There was once a rich man who dressed in the most expensive clothes and lived in great luxury every day. 20 There was also a poor man named Lazarus, covered with sores, who used to be brought to the rich man's door, 21 hoping to eat the bits of food that fell from the rich man's table. Even the dogs would come and lick his sores. 22 The poor man died and was carried by the angels to sit beside Abraham at the feast in heaven. The rich man died and was buried, 23 and in Hades, where he was in great pain, he looked up and saw Abraham, far away, with Lazarus at his side. 24 So he called out, "Father Abraham! Take pity on me, and send Lazarus to dip his finger in some water and cool off my tongue, because I am in great pain in this fire!' 25 But Abraham said, "Remember, my son, that in your lifetime you were given all the good things, while Lazarus got all the bad things. But now he is enjoying himself here, while you are in pain. 26 Besides all that, there is a deep pit lying between us, so that those who want to cross over from here to you cannot do so, nor can anyone cross over to us from where you are.' 27 The rich man said, "Then I beg you, father Abraham, send Lazarus to my father's house, 28 where I have five brothers. Let him go and warn them so that they, at least, will not come to this place of pain.' 29 Abraham said, "Your brothers have Moses and the prophets to warn them; your brothers should listen to what they say.' 30 The rich man answered, "That is not enough, father Abraham! But if someone were to rise from death and go to them, then they would turn from their sins.' 31 But Abraham said, "If they will not listen to Moses and the prophets, they will not be convinced even if someone were to rise from death.'

1 Jesus said to his disciples, "There was once a rich man who had a servant who managed his property. The rich man was told that the manager was wasting his master's money, 2 so he called him in and said, "What is this I hear about you? Turn in a complete account of your handling of my property, because you cannot be my manager any longer.' 3 The servant said to himself, "My master is going to dismiss me from my job. What shall I do? I am not strong enough to dig ditches, and I am ashamed to beg. 4 Now I know what I will do! Then when my job is gone, I shall have friends who will welcome me in their homes.' 5 So he called in all the people who were in debt to his master. He asked the first one, "How much do you owe my master?' 6 "One hundred barrels of olive oil,' he answered. "Here is your account,' the manager told him; "sit down and write fifty.' 7 Then he asked another one, "And you, how much do you owe?' "A thousand bushels of wheat,' he answered. "Here is your account,' the manager told him; "write eight hundred.' 8 As a result the master of this dishonest manager praised him for doing such a shrewd thing; because the people of this world are much more shrewd in handling their affairs than the people who belong to the light." 9 And Jesus went on to say, "And so I tell you: make friends for yourselves with worldly wealth, so that when it gives out, you will be welcomed in the eternal home. 10 Whoever is faithful in small matters will be faithful in large ones; whoever is dishonest in small matters will be dishonest in large ones. 11 If, then, you have not been faithful in handling worldly wealth, how can you be trusted with true wealth? 12 And if you have not been faithful with what belongs to someone else, who will give you what belongs to you? 13 "No servant can be the slave of two masters; such a slave will hate one and love the other or will be loyal to one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money." 14 When the Pharisees heard all this, they made fun of Jesus, because they loved money. 15 Jesus said to them, "You are the ones who make yourselves look right in other people's sight, but God knows your hearts. For the things that are considered of great value by people are worth nothing in God's sight.

11 Jesus went on to say, "There was once a man who had two sons. 12 The younger one said to him, "Father, give me my share of the property now.' So the man divided his property between his two sons. 13 After a few days the younger son sold his part of the property and left home with the money. He went to a country far away, where he wasted his money in reckless living. 14 He spent everything he had. Then a severe famine spread over that country, and he was left without a thing. 15 So he went to work for one of the citizens of that country, who sent him out to his farm to take care of the pigs. 16 He wished he could fill himself with the bean pods the pigs ate, but no one gave him anything to eat. 17 At last he came to his senses and said, "All my father's hired workers have more than they can eat, and here I am about to starve! 18 I will get up and go to my father and say, "Father, I have sinned against God and against you. 19 I am no longer fit to be called your son; treat me as one of your hired workers." ' 20 So he got up and started back to his father.

"He was still a long way from home when his father saw him; his heart was filled with pity, and he ran, threw his arms around his son, and kissed him. 21 "Father,' the son said, "I have sinned against God and against you. I am no longer fit to be called your son.' 22 But the father called to his servants. "Hurry!' he said. "Bring the best robe and put it on him. Put a ring on his finger and shoes on his feet. 23 Then go and get the prize calf and kill it, and let us celebrate with a feast! 24 For this son of mine was dead, but now he is alive; he was lost, but now he has been found.' And so the feasting began. 25 "In the meantime the older son was out in the field. On his way back, when he came close to the house, he heard the music and dancing. 26 So he called one of the servants and asked him, "What's going on?' 27 "Your brother has come back home,' the servant answered, "and your father has killed the prize calf, because he got him back safe and sound.' 28 The older brother was so angry that he would not go into the house; so his father came out and begged him to come in. 29 But he spoke back to his father, "Look, all these years I have worked for you like a slave, and I have never disobeyed your orders. What have you given me? Not even a goat for me to have a feast with my friends! 30 But this son of yours wasted all your property on prostitutes, and when he comes back home, you kill the prize calf for him!' 31 "My son,' the father answered, "you are always here with me, and everything I have is yours. 32 But we had to celebrate and be happy, because your brother was dead, but now he is alive; he was lost, but now he has been found.' 1 One day when many tax collectors and other outcasts came to listen to Jesus, 2 the Pharisees and the teachers of the Law started grumbling, "This man welcomes outcasts and even eats with them!" 3 So Jesus told them this parable: 4 "Suppose one of you has a hundred sheep and loses one of them, what do you do? You leave the other ninety-nine sheep in the pasture and go looking for the one that got lost until you find it. 5 When you find it, you are so happy that you put it on your shoulders 6 and carry it back home. Then you call your friends and neighbors together and say to them, "I am so happy I found my lost sheep. Let us celebrate!' 7 In the same way, I tell you, there will be more joy in heaven over one sinner who repents than over ninety-nine respectable people who do not need to repent. 8 "Or suppose a woman who has ten silver coins loses one of them, what does she do? She lights a lamp, sweeps her house, and looks carefully everywhere until she finds it. 9 When she finds it, she calls her friends and neighbors together, and says to them, "I am so happy I found the coin I lost. Let us celebrate!' 10 In the same way, I tell you, the angels of God rejoice over one sinner who repents."

請你在心中描畫出婦人尋找丟失錢幣的情形。你想她為何如此急切的想要找到?當她找到失幣時,她做了什麼?(路15: 8)

Note: When Palestinian women got married they were given ten silver coins as a wedding gift. Losing one would almost be like losing a wedding ring.
摘記:當時的巴勒斯坦婦女結婚時,她們會得十個銀幣作為結婚禮物,因此,遺失一個銀幣就好像遺失了結婚戒指一樣。

6. Who represents the lost sheep or the lost coin in these parables?
在比喻中失羊和失錢是代表誰?

7. How did the Pharisees view sinners? How does Jesus view sinners?
法利賽人如何看待罪人?耶穌又是如何看待罪人?

8. According to these parables, what can we learn about God’s nature? How does God feel when His children are lost? What happens in heaven when on sinner repents? (Luke 15: 7-10)
從這些比喻中,我們可以學到上帝的本性為何?當祂的孩子迷失時,上帝的感覺如何?當一個罪人悔改時,天上發生了什麼事?(路15: 7-10)
